Artist Statement
I paint portraits to reveal the amazing complexity of humanity. Layers of drips, line, texture, colour and pattern all represent a different facet of the physical and emotional body we inhabit. Sentiments and personality traits are treated like tissue, muscle, skin and blood. Melded and created to survive our world. I style oil paint to divulge each layer like the peeling of an onion, each new skin hiding the delicate ones underneath.
I construct artworks that deal with people and the metaphorical masks we wear in order to live, thrive and survive in society. The way we communicate within our homes, jobs and free time demands a different character from everyone. The way we react to difficult and enjoyable situations, and particularly the honesty of our intentions, form the subject of my images.
